Greetings!  :D

Just wanna give a suggestion. Is it possible that you create Lanster such that every searched and found item is stored into a table or at least a text files. You see, i am connected to the LAN where there are approximately 3000 pcs sharing files and i find it very inconvenient to have to keep searching somewhat 3000 computers for files... After each search is done, i want to save them so that i could refer to them again later without having to scan for that file again.

That creates a very interesting topic. I have been asked for this feature from another user a long time ago and I opted not to include that in the program.

My reasoning is this..workstations have alot of files. On my work machine alone I have about 45,000 files. Say I share only about 3,000 files and so do most of the other workstations. On a network where, say 2,000 workstations are sharing files, that is about 6 million files that are openly shared!!!! That's alot of files so the best way to do a "search and save" type of function would be to save the information to a true database. A plain text file search would be EXTREMELY slow...maybe even slower than just normal network search.

Couple things to think about.... the best thing that MicroSoft has to offer for the desktop without getting into a corporate level database is the Access type database. That type of database is suited for no more than 1 million records or so. Also, the size of the database itself would be enormous in my view. Just to give you a rough idea of the size of a database, I have a file with about 4 million records in it, and its size is about 133 MB and it has less information than would be required by a "search and save" function! The last thing I want to do is to put a monstrous file on the user's machine.

Let me know your thoughts.

:) That's true, textfile is definitely out of the question... Probably suited for some small and medium enterprise LAN...
Just suggesting it because mabbe you dun wanna put in too much effort on the database and just have a save to text file option...

I am aware of the large amount of file i will be getting... Though you are sharing like somewhat 3000 files, but out of which i am interested in is only a fraction of it rite? Like say avi or mpeg files... or even mp3 files... So, the database is actually smaller than that unless the user want to scan all the files! Which i am sure he/she should be able to guess/be warned that the database will be very large...

If you are planning to put it into access database, each mdb file is limited to say 1 milion record (can't remember the exact figure) but that's only for a file i think. Perhaps you can design it such that it saves into multiple mdb files.. Better still, sort the files  according to extension into different mdb files before adding them...

There are some shareware available that does almost similar thing like Cool Find... Check it out... Later if you want to sell your program, you may like to add that because i should think that there is a market segment (people like me) that wants to store them into database...

Btw, i have another suggestion... Allow user to type in the path manually instead of browse, coz most of the time when i want to search a particular computer, it just hang because of the huge number of computers in my network which have to be listed first while browsing....

I checked out Cool Find and it is a good program. I started LANster at a time when there were very few programs like it and the ones that did exist had limited functionality. If I do add the database feature I might have to make it shareware rather than freeware. Reason i say that is because implementing that functionality will take alot of time to code and test. I just dont have as much time on my hands as I used to.  :)

On the inputting the starting node manually, I was already in the process of coding that into the next version of LANster. I will finish up the current version and release it pretty soon.

Thanx.
